Tech which makes Sense

If you are a native English speaker looking to move to Abu Dhabi, teaching jobs are popular ways to find employment. However, the city can be quite different if you are not used to living in a Middle Eastern country. Although it is one of the more westernized cities in the area, there are still a few things to learn about it to help ensure teaching jobs in Abu Dhabi run smoothly.

Teaching jobs in Abu Dhabi usually involve adult learners

Although there are some teaching positions in Abu Dhabi that cater to school-age children, several jobs will have teachers working with adults. Local companies often want to increase their business with Western companies, which means they are committed to helping their employees learn to speak English. If you are only interested in teaching jobs in Abu Dhabi that will have you working with school-age children, you may need to look a little further.

Traveling by taxi is quite easy

The city can be quite congested and because of this, many visitors choose to use a taxi instead of renting or buying a car. If you need to drive while in the UAE, you will need an international permit from the local post office in order to rent a car. Also, many traffic laws are different (for example, making a right turn on a red light is illegal here, while it is allowed in many parts of the United States) and understanding where you are going can be quite difficult. This is because many streets in the city are referred to by local landmarks and not their actual names, which means you might be looking for something on Electra Street, only to discover that it’s actually labeled Sheikh Zayeed the second street. Taxis, on the other hand, are plentiful, fully regulated by the government, and cheap enough to make them a viable transportation option.

It’s very, very hot

Like any other city in the Middle East, Abu Dhabi is hot. It can routinely reach over 100 degrees Fahrenheit from June to September. This sweltering heat outside means that everything indoors is air-conditioned throughout the city and the air-conditioning can actually be quite cold, especially in malls like Al Raha Mall, Marina Mall and Al Wahda Mall. For this reason, many people opt to for wearing a light sweater to keep warm when they go shopping.

Western clothing is not frowned upon

You are likely to find people dressed in all kinds of clothes in Abu Dhabi. Skimpy clothing, such as short shorts and tank tops, can attract stars and negative attention, so many women avoid revealing clothing. However, there is nothing against the law. Strappy tops are fine if you’re going to enjoy a cocktail or two at a bar, but many women opt to wear a light sweater or pashmina to cover their shoulders when they go out. However, local dress codes are not just for women! Many bars will bar men wearing shorts or open sandals from entering. When in doubt, dress conservatively and don’t be afraid to call and ask about the dress code before visiting an attraction.

If you plan to look for teaching jobs in Abu Dhabi, becoming familiar with the city can help ensure a successful experience. Do not be afraid to ask for help or guidance and you will surely have an unforgettable time.
