You arrive at a restaurant happy to get that food that you always love. The Caesar salad and for the entree, a good ribeye cooked to medium well. There is only one catch, their service was horrible. The steak was undercooked, the server was only at your table twice and your drink is empty. What do you do for a living? There are a lot of people who just go off on the server or a manager, but as an adult this is not a way to handle yourself. You disagree. Here are some dos and don’ts of proper restaurant etiquette.

DO: From the beginning, sit where the host seats you.

Unless you are physically unable to sit there due to a disability or because you are too cold, so sit close to the door, the host operates on a system where they rotate the tables so that they can distribute the tables evenly. It is widely understood that some people may not fit in the booths and that is perfectly fine. If you are noticeably upset for a small reason, nine times out of ten the message will be relayed immediately to the assigned server, who in certain situations may not want to spend too much time at your table.

DON’T: toughen up your server.

In other words, don’t leave a zero dollar tip. Although some services are insanely horrible, the staff are working to keep you happy and on a full belly as you try to feed their own. The average server makes about $ 5 an hour, which in hindsight is about $ 40 a week if it weren’t for tips. They make money off tips from customers. When they stiffen, it’s almost as if the whole table and all that energy is a waste of time. If you are a regular customer who does not tip, you probably find that you are receiving mediocre service night after night. That is because in the minds of the servers it is not worth your time if you are not going to tip. They prefer to have the couple in the corner that is the first time that they are going to leave a good couple of dollars for the server.

These are just two tips for a current server who doesn’t want to see people walk in or out annoyingly. In the world of serving tables, tips are everything and a happy customer means a happy server. If a problem occurs, speak like an adult to management and stay calm.
