Gender Specific Housing Options

Students who select this preference can be assigned to York student accommodation, suites or apartments without a gender designation and legal sex is not considered during the assignment process. Students may also update their preferences at any time by logging into their myHousing account.

UB is one of the first universities in Erie County to introduce gender inclusive housing. Senior associate director of campus living Brian Haggerty expects the program to attract a range of students, from those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) to people who want to live with friends of the opposite sex.

In the fall of 2022, a new community in CoEd Hall will be comprised entirely of gender inclusive traditional style rooms with two gender inclusive communal style bathrooms. These spaces will have community meetings to determine what policies the community wishes to implement. The Office of Residential Life will work with the community to ensure all residents have full access to these bathrooms in compliance with NYC-specific guidelines.

Despite the promise of equality, some transgender people find it difficult to live in gender inclusive housing. CAS first-year Hazel Williams, who uses she/her pronouns and lives in Lipton Residence Hall with two transgender female-identified roommates, says the housing option has been challenging. She cites misunderstandings and a lack of communication with her suitemates as some of the challenges she has faced.

The gender-neutral dorm option is part of a larger movement to create safer and more inclusive college environments for LGBT students. According to a national advocacy organization called Campus Pride, 205 schools across the country offer gender-inclusive housing in some form, including 24 SUNY campuses. This is up from a little over 50 schools offering the option a few years ago.

Gender Specific Housing Options at York College

While some colleges are expanding their gender-neutral housing options, others are restricting it. Some argue that it encourages students to shack up. Others worry about the impact it could have on the LGBTQ community.

Gender inclusive housing has been a hotly debated topic on campuses nationwide, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed at York. Students at our campus and in the wider York area have been sharing their experiences, thoughts, and feelings about this housing option on social media.

Her Campus spoke to York student accommodation who petitioned for gender-inclusive housing, as well as those who have already lived in the communities, to find out what they think about it.

Safety and security are paramount when it comes to student accommodation. Universities and accommodation providers must ensure that the premises are well-maintained, adequately lit, and equipped with modern security systems. Access control measures, including secure entry points and CCTV surveillance, help create a safe living environment where students feel protected and can focus on their studies without unnecessary worries.

When it comes to student accommodation, convenience and proximity to educational institutions are key considerations. Living close to campus or having easy access to public transportation saves students valuable time and energy, allowing them to fully engage in their academic pursuits and extracurricular activities. Proximity to campus also facilitates involvement in student organizations, clubs, and events, fostering a sense of community and enabling students to make the most of their college experience.

Throughout the summer, students who are interested in gender inclusive housing will be able to indicate their interest by selecting it on their myHousing application and deposit. We will notify students with the status of their applications. Students who are selected to be a member of this community will be required to sign a Living Agreement and be eligible for breaks in the residence tower. Those who are not selected for GIH will be permitted to stay in their current room over breaks. All students who request 9 month housing will be subject to a higher cost to cover the additional occupancy.
