There are 5 proven obstacles to speed reading success

The term “speed reading” offers 55 million results on Google. There is an overabundance of information related to this topic. Even if you’re highly motivated to improve your reading and comprehension, the information overload is enough to make you want to quit before you start! Quitting smoking is obviously one of the reasons why speed reading doesn’t work. However, there are several more reasons why people don’t master speed reading that you should be aware of.

Reason 1: Misinformation: The web will allow you to access 55 million pages on the subject; becoming overwhelmed and disoriented by much of the information available, especially the “free stuff”. As you dig deeper into the search term results, you’ll find contradictory, outdated, and often untrue claims and information from marketing experts, most of whom don’t know anything about the subject.

Reason 2: Excessive emphasis on “Eye-Span” and Eye Speed – To read faster and better, you need to move your eyes (the mechanics of reading) in a more efficient way. However, almost all speed reading programs focus only on this component. Software programs are specially designed around this single aspect of reading. The truth is, you can only read as fast as your mind can comprehend or comprehend the material. Reading requires the reader to understand the material, whether it is done quickly or not. Very few programs teach the comprehension aspect at high speeds and let the student “get it” one day with enough practice.

Reason 3: Effective Reading Is “Whole Brain Activated” – Using a simple model of left and right brain functioning, language is primarily a function of the left neocortex in the brain, as well as sequencing, grammatical structuring, linearly, individual parts (words), etc. To teach traditional reading, a left-brain approach is used. Almost all speed reading programs are based on this same premise and thus simply speed up what the reader has been doing for years. However, the right neocortex is the center of imagination, creativity, understanding of the “gestalt” (totality), concepts and meanings. Without learning to activate the right side of your brain, speed reading will just be an exhausting way to do what you’ve always done. For faster reading to work for you, you need to understand the “whole” of the material before your mind can adequately understand and remember the parts.

Reason 4: Effective speed reading requires a change in the way you understand and perceive – To radically change your reading behavior, you must also change your approach to comprehension. He has read and understood printed material using the traditional approach that she learned many years ago. it’s habit. In reality, nothing will permanently change in your reading comprehension and behavior until you make the switch from that old approach to a new one. In order to make sense of the material, your brain/mind will always tend to revert to the previous habit. It is their default way of understanding.

Reason 5: Mastering “whole brain” faster reading requires correct and masterful practice – When you start to change your comprehension habits, you start to retrain your brain/mind. This change does not happen easily. Your mind is a very powerful tool. He is also a very resilient friend. The brain/mind will try to keep you stuck in your old ways. Only through repetition of correct practice will new behaviors and insights take hold. Beware of learning to “speed read in 16 minutes!” That phrase is good marketing copy, but it’s actually false.

Also, note the term “good practice.” Without practicing under the guidance of a trained specialist, you will most likely fall into mistakes. After training thousands of students over many years, I’ve learned that just because someone says they’re “practicing” doesn’t mean they’re engaging in the correct behaviors that lead to mastery. Practice requires monitoring, coaching, and feedback when learning to speed read masterfully. You can do it! Almost everyone can learn to read four to ten times faster with good comprehension.
