Most of us have seen the spectacular scenery around Moab without realizing it; the landscape has often been used as a setting for Hollywood westerns. Before that, popular Western novelist Zane Gray sparked readers’ imaginations with actions set in Moab. Real people began arriving in the city from the Colorado River in the 1950s when uranium was discovered nearby. Despite the fact that the mines have since been depleted, the city has never returned to its sleepy agricultural days.

Today Moab is an open-air mecca at the foot of the La Salle Mountains. Moab
is the gateway to the canyon of southeastern Utah and the national parks in
Canyonlands and Arches. Dogs are not allowed on the field in these parks,
on trails or rivers within the park. Still, there are many other opportunities
here that make Moab a dog friendly destination for people who love to hike with
your dog.

Legend has it that once cowboys herded wild mustangs to the top of this
mesa – 2000 feet above the Colorado River – and blocked their escape through a
narrow neck of earth with branches and bushes, thus creating a natural corral. Ounce
