Tech which makes Sense

If you’re going on a road trip this summer, no matter how long or short, consider giving your car a good repair before you hit the road. Here’s how to cover the critical items to get your car in top condition for a big road trip.

“Summer road trips can mean spending a lot of time in the car, so it’s important to keep it clean and in good repair,” says Greg Lynch, founder of the Scenic Travel Canada website and a travel enthusiast. “A clean, well-maintained vehicle will be more reliable, fuel efficient, and more comfortable to drive.”

inside the vehicle

  • Remove all debris from the floor, under the seats, and from inside the trunk. A car left out in the sun can reach +55C, which can produce unpleasant odors as the rubbish bakes, ferments and produces penicillin.
  • Clean all front and back boards. In the event of an emergency stop, these objects can become dangerous projectiles. Also make sure your GPS unit is securely attached to the windshield or dashboard.
  • Clean the windows, especially the front windshield, so you can take sharp photos from the safety of your car. Talk to any road maintenance crew and see how many smashed phones and cameras they have found along the road.
  • Ask yourself, when was the last time you vacuumed your car seats and carpet?

outside the vehicle

  • At the car wash, spend an extra $2 to thoroughly wash the wheel wells and undercarriage. This is a good way to remove corrosive road salt that has built up in tight spots.
  • Do not wash the engine compartment with a high pressure hose or even a garden hose! Water can force its way into electrical connections and short out critical components. If you are determined to have a clean engine, wipe it down with a damp cloth.
  • After washing the car, apply wax and then polish. Your car will look great until it’s covered in bugs and bird droppings… but that’s only part of a great road trip.

Underhood

  • Get your oil changed. The easiest way to extend the life of a car engine is with frequent oil and oil filter changes. Maintain the recommended schedule as described in the owner’s manual.
  • Check fluid levels, including power steering, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and engine coolant.
  • Changing the air filter when it is dirty will improve fuel economy and performance and help keep engine oil cleaner longer.
  • The passenger compartment air filter can become clogged with dust, leaves, and pollen. If you notice that your dashboard is getting dusty frequently, it may be time to change it.
  • Check the air pressure in your tires and adjust it appropriately. Properly inflated tires will increase fuel efficiency and help them last longer.
  • Before packing the trunk, check the air pressure in the spare tire so it isn’t useless in a moment of need.

Using simple maintenance tips and some common sense can make a world of difference in the appearance, handling, and performance of your car. More importantly, taking good care of your vehicle will keep it safe while traveling on a great Canadian road trip this summer.
