In addition to not owning the property, potential tenants should examine some structural and physical conditions of the home before entering into a lease. Examine windows and doors
Be sure to check around the edge of windows and doors for airflow. This may be applicable, especially in colder climates where such drafts can cause a spike in your winter heating bills.
A clear plastic sheet can seal some drafts around windows during cold weather so small drafts can be easily managed. While for drafts around doors, have your landlord or rental management company replace the weather stripping before you move out.
Check for any signs of moisture
Avoid long-term moisture problems by looking for signs of water damage, which can include exposed pipes (under sinks), in bathrooms, and even in basements. Also, consider some indications of moisture problems simply by trying to find the presence of moisture, mold or mildew growth, or rotten wood.
It is still worth staying in a place free of moisture problems. Long-term moisture problems sometimes lead to mold growth. And being exposed to some types of mold can lead to a more serious health problem. Living in a place with humidity problems can be dangerous for people who are allergic to mold.
look for outer holes
Take a close look at the perimeter of the property and check it as thoroughly as you can for any openings or holes that could let pests in or heat out. Pay due attention to areas where gaps often occur, which are around the foundation and the roof line. Living in a well-sealed house helps us avoid discomfort living in its walls. It also provides us with comfort, protection and great savings on your air conditioning and heating bills.
Inspect electrical outlets
Never forget to consider the electrical connections in the apartment or house you are moving into. Make sure you have adequate power outlets for your needs. Most rentals, particularly older houses, have limited electrical outlets. Consider how many appliances or electrical items you will be using for a particular room, such as the living room and kitchen.
It is possible to plug in more appliances using power strips, but it can be a fire hazard if you use many power strips or plug some high voltage items into power strips. It’s just too impossible to plug a microwave, toaster, and coffee maker all at the same time into a single socket in the kitchen. It is most likely not the safest option for you.
