The average middle-class American family of four, living in a three-bedroom house, will use the kitchen at least twice a day to make breakfast (or at least a bowl of cereal) and prepare dinner. Some families can’t afford to eat three full meals a day with everyone together at one table, but they can at least get one or two good meals if they make use of their kitchen cabinets.
Eating with the family around a round kitchen table or something similar instead of sitting in the living room eating junk food and dining in front of the TV every day will make your family healthier in the long run. You may not be able to eat better food, but at least you will have ample opportunities for communication and growth.
More family time means more time to solve problems. Everyone has problems, and the goal of a nuclear family is to help each other through them. If her daughter is having trouble at school or fighting with a boyfriend, the kitchen cabinets will give you an opportunity to sit down and talk to her about it. If she doesn’t talk about things with her children, things will only get worse. The more time she spends sitting down and talking with the family about a healthy meal, the healthier everyone’s mindset will be and the stronger the bond will be.
In addition to the benefit of family time, kitchen cabinets give you a place to prepare meals. A mobile island can be a great advantage for the chef who struggles with too many tools and nowhere to put them. If she likes to make complicated meals with lots of ingredients and lots of kitchen gadgets, she’ll enjoy using the furniture to her advantage. The more furniture you have in the kitchen (as long as it doesn’t take up all of your walking space), the more counter space you’ll have, and the easier it will be to prepare meals.
The middle-class house is usually not very big. Not everyone can have their own private place to do homework, balance the checkbook, or write a novel when they can’t afford additional official home office space. A round kitchen table makes a perfect desk in a pinch and can be shared by everyone when people aren’t eating at it.
Families love kitchen cabinets because they are so versatile and provide many more family-related activities.
