I just can’t believe it!

There is a “World Pasta Day”!

A day in which the whole world has reason to unite.

You can probably tell by now that I like pasta. In fact, I have never put a pasta that I did not like.

Whether it’s served with tomato sauce that’s simmered for hours or a sauce that mixes up in a matter of minutes, I don’t care.

Even if it’s topped with pesto or just garlic butter, food is special and deserves respect.

Yes, pasta is a dish to enjoy in any circumstance.

Can you remember the best pasta meal you’ve ever had?

I remember a meal in Toronto on Yonge Street in the 1970s. My client and I were walking down the street looking for a place to eat when we noticed delicious smells coming from an open door. We had no choice but to follow the invitation of the scents and partake of the best they had to offer. Your chef used a generous amount of garlic and with the salad, bread, butter and olive oil we consumed our fill and created memories that resist fading.

During my formative years I enjoyed the occasional can of room temperature spaghetti. Yes, straight out of the can, and now, many years later, I make it less often, but I still find it a good side dish when I’m in a rush.

These modern days there are all kinds of spaghetti that use different flours from various grains. For those who are allergic to wheat, there is always the alternative of rice.

Of course, not all pasta is spaghetti. There is a seemingly endless variety of thicknesses and sizes.

There are macaroni, lasagna, and other popular settings used in various dishes.

During warm weather, we enjoy pasta salad, and it’s easy to make.

Yes, most pasta dishes can be put together quickly and salad should be at the top of the list with some chopped greens and a store-bought dressing. The dish can be cooked and assembled in less than 20 minutes.

A friend of mine was invited to someone’s house for dinner where he was served spaghetti with canned vegetable soup on top. It was an unusual meal, but one that worked for that family.

Pasta historians tell us that it was invented by the Sicilians in the 12th century. I wonder if they ever considered how popular their invention would become.

They considered it a simple dish, but now with the invention of various sauces, its complexity can be high for those with discerning tastes. I confess an inability to discern between a Okay sauce that takes hours of careful preparation and a poor one that is pulled together. I have eaten in some of the best restaurants in the world, but I cannot adequately assess the value of their efforts. It’s not that I don’t appreciate a good salsa, it’s that they all taste good to me and to many of my friends.

Therefore, on this very special day, October 25, you can put aside any dietary requirement and enjoy a good portion of pasta, the one that will fill your stomach and release endorphins to make the experience memorable.

Pasta day? Yes!
